Ultrasound Q & A

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound machine is an imaging tool that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize structures inside your body. Ultrasounds produce dynamic images of your soft tissues that can’t be accurately seen on X-rays.

Because of their precise imaging capabilities and strong signals, ultrasound imaging is an effective diagnostic tool. And in some cases, it's a treatment modality.

How is an ultrasound performed?

Dr. Haciski may perform an ultrasound transvaginally, using a wand to examine your reproductive organs, or above the skin to view detailed images of your abdomen or another part of your body.

A jelly-like substance that enhances the sound waves is applied to the skin, and allows the transducer to move smoothly over your skin. This handheld device emits ultrasound waves that penetrate the tissue without causing pain or discomfort. Because there's no pain, you won’t be sedated for an ultrasound.

As the waves go through your body, they echo when colliding with a dense object like a bone, organ, or cyst. The transducer reads these echoes and translates them into vibrant, real-time images.

Dr. Haciski personally performs the procedure in-office and will be able to show you the results right away. Most ultrasounds take 15 minutes or less.

When do I need an ultrasound?

Besides monitoring the development of a fetus, Dr. Haciski can use ultrasounds to:

  • Diagnose and treat endometriosis
  • Diagnose fibroids and cysts
  • Manage treatment for fibroids and cysts
  • Understand the cause of pelvic pain
  • Diagnose the cause of heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Determine the cause of abnormal bleeding

Dr. Haciski also uses ultrasound to manage ongoing treatment of other gynecologic conditions or diseases. Unlike X-rays, ultrasounds don't expose you to radiation and can be done more frequently without risks.
